Authentic Dutch windmill on the bank of the Mississippi river. Operates when conditions permit. Manned by volunteers who are knowledgeable about the workings. Cultural center across the street with model windmills some of which actually turn. Add in a couple hours at Heritage Canyon an 1860's pioneer village just a few blocks up river.

Came here on a side trip after visiting Dubuque. Who would think that a dutch style windmill would be right here in Illinois. Right on the banks of the Mississippi and there is a cultural center nearby that was unfortunately closed so i will have to come back!

The windmill is interesting, but it wasn't operating on the afternoon we visited. There was a volunteer there to answer questions, but I would have liked to see the mechanism working. I did purchase some flour and mustard at the shop across the street.

On a group tour the millers showed us how the windmill works to grind flour. Very interesting and scenic.

I went to this windmill as part of a photography class project. Illinois has only 4 windmills. This Windmill is beautifully restored and maintained. There is a group of volunteers that call themselves the "Millers" that offer free tours and teach people all the working aspects of the windmill. They mill flour here that they sell in the giftshop!! Amazing... when you walk through the windmill you actually see the grinders and the flour catching sacks. The miller then takes you outside to move the blades so that they can catch the wind. Its an amazing process. The fun part is watching the Miller wear his wooden clogs while he works at cranking the windmill mechanism that moves the blades. Very interesting gem at the side of the mighty Mississippi. So glad we made the trip out there. Only took me about 1hr and 45min from the fox valley area. passing beautiful small towns along the way.

I have been through the windmill on three occasions and have always found another interesting facet of this really cool structure. Worth the trip!

No handicap access, but it is a windmill. Very interesting, go inside during hours of tours. Standing on deck over Miss. Rvr. is great, don't miss big wooden shoe and cow on first floor. Windmills were used for signals too, in a cross meant it was safe to enter town, X said danger. Bring your camera!

The windmill is beautiful and there is lots to learn about how it works. Knowledgeable guides will explain in as much detail that you desire. I had visited windmills in the Netherlands and was pleasantly surprised by this authentic, working windmill, constructed by Dutch engineers. We also learned a great deal about the town (many Dutch immigrants) and enjoyed the view on the Mississippi River. Admission s free, however donations for maintenance are welcomed. Try on a pair of wooden shoes at the entrance. This is a delightful experience and we are so happy that we stopped by!

If you live within 150 miles of Fulton, IL and Clinton, IA you must stop here for a great day trip. The windmill grinds grain (you can buy it there). Beautiful river walk. Cute little town. Don't miss the museum across the street.

Fascinating! The staff spent a lot of time explaining the windmill operations in detail! The finished products, a variety of stoneground flours will be traveling home with us.

Good look at a Dutch windmill. Interesting story about how it was built in Holland, disassembled and brought to this Mississippi river town and reassembled. Nice gift shop with pleasant, knowledgeable staff.

This windmill was shipped from Holland and assembled in Fulton. It is completely authentic and, periodically, it is used to grind grain. It is worth a walk through. The museum/gift shop across the street has amazing windmill models, souvenirs, and food including flour and homemade mustard.

This authentic windmill was a welcome addition to our community. A large group of the population in our area are decendents from the area this windmill was brought from. It is kept up and has a nice informative tour. You can also buy flour ground in the mill.

I've been in windmills before, but this one has interior parts that are labeled and it's kept quite clean. The man giving the talk upstairs was informative and seemed to really enjoy the topic, so that makes for a good learning experience.

Took my grandson and he was thrilled that he got to help grind his own grains and we took home a bag of buckwheat flour
