Tis a must Walking around and admiring stunning well kept old buildings was truly fantastic I was visiting Galt Country Club and it was suggested I take this walk

I had the pleasure of visiting this neighborhood while visiting some friends. I was amazed at it's beauty. It has a bunch of really beautiful old buildings, cute restaurants, local stores, and a lovely river. I went to the farmer's market on a Saturday and was impressed by it. It's a smaller farmer's market, but it had really good produce and baked goods available. Overall, I found it to be a great area to visit with an interesting arts scene

I am biased. Grew up here. Left in 1960. But, go back regularly to visit family. The four stone churches downtown (Knox's, Central, St. Thomas and Wellesley) are well preserved. The old, old post office, built in 1885 on Water Street beside the river, is being re-purposed into library and restaurant space under a heritage conservation plan. Another stone building (only partly old), the Mill restaurant, is a good place to eat. The market beside the old stone City Hall on Dickson Street has been operating there for 144 years.Don't miss the new city hall attached to the old one. It is a sensetive piece of more modern architecture. The Library in nearby Hespeler is another. The University of Waterloo School of Architecture is located along the river near the Main street bridge in the old (1915) Riverside Silk Mill, that was renovated to provide wonderful spaces for design studios, labs, and classrooms. It also includes a design library, exhibition galleries, public auditorium, and cafe. The exhibits are often interesting. And the bustling cafe a good stop for lunch. The new 500 seat Dunfield Theatre, part of the Drayton Entertainment Group, sits beside the restored 19th century South Works outlet shops. Both worth a visit.Lots of history, good little restaurants downtown and a pleasant place to stroll along the river. All in all a great place or a days outing. Galt (named after John Galt) is part of the City of Cambridge which was amalgamated January 1, 1973 by joining the City of Galt with the towns of Preston and Hespeler and the Blair hamlet. Galt maintains the historic feel of an old English/Scottish village in the downtown area with many heritage buildings and older homes. The downtown core has been used as the setting of several movies and maintains the charm in the historic architecture. There are boutiques, bistros with sidewalk dining areas, the Farmer's Market, Olde City Hall as well as the Southworks Outlet Mall all within walking distance or a very short drive. Don't forget to visit Reid Candy and Nuts for a delicious treat and choose your own selection of chocolates or pick one of their prepackaged selection. Step in the door to the sumptuous smell of chocolate, nuts, popcorn and fudge and prepare to have a hard time choosing! Take a walk along the river on one of the walkways (some are wheelchair accessible) or walk through the older neighbourhoods with their charming old streetlamps. Drive along the Grand to Blair and you may see eagles, osprey, herons along with other wildlife including otters, muskrats and foxes. Take a spin on the Grand in a canoe or kayak or watch the kayakers fight the current below the dam. Don't forget your camera as you never know what you might see that you want to remember! It's a great place to visit or to live with small town feel and the amenities of a city.

There are several small shops to explore and enjoy. Plus the downtown is peppered with several great little restaurants and Bistros. It really does have that small city charm and on Saturday Morning make sure you visit the farmers market. After visiting the downtown core drive around the corner and across the river and spend some additional quality shopping time at the South Works Mall

The Grand River runs through downtown Galt and supports a range of wildlife including beaver, muskrat, bald eagles, great blue herons, cormorants and many other birds. There are walking trails along the river and canoeing/kayaking opportunities either in the pond above the dam or the river itself. Galt has good restaurants including The Mill which overlooks the dam, the new Dunfield Theatre complex and several landmark buildings including the old (haunted) post office. The city also hosts the Architecture School for the University of Waterloo which has a gallery as well as the Cambridge Library and Gallery on the square. It is an historic and pretty place to visit.

Galt is a very old part of Cambridge with lots of beautiful architecture and lots of great restaurants and shops. The views along the river are wonderful and there is plenty of parking available...no charge for under 2 hours. Bring a camera along because the buildings have unique and beautiful stone and ginger work that will attract the eye. And if you're in town on Wednesday or Saturday, a stop at the Farmer's Market (located on Dickson Street) is necessary. From fine dining to hot dogs along the riverside, Galt is worth a visit.

It's safe, reasonably priced and reasonably friendly. Mostly a Factory town, but lots of other jobs around. To just visit, the Motels & Hotels are pretty pricey. Book online is the best deals. Been here 25 years, raised family & plan to retire here. Don't forget to visit African Lion Safari... IT'S THE BEST, for all ages. .

Rented a "puddle-jumper" from Enterprise and didn't realize how hard on the kidneys a little car and the neglected roads can add up bone-jarring discomfort.

The old town of Galt straddles the Grand River, and is undergoing a transformation without losing it's uniqueness. Many of the old historical buildings are being repurposed, and over the past year or so, there have been many new businesses locate there. It is a mix of old architecture and new (the Dunfield Theatre is set to open shortly). With lots of walking trails along the river, it is a beautiful setting, particuarly in the fall.

Galt has combined the historical buildings with modern convenience and retained it's charm. The center of the town is so unique, it allows movie companies to use the buildings for movies and TV productions - e.g. Murdock Mysteries.

nice walking areas if yo know where to go. lots of traffic congestion, but once you are out on the trails that all melts away.

KamlaP_12

Galt has expanded really well over the past 7 years or so. It is nice to see all new development of houses that are still somewhat reasonable compared to other cities that are within 40-70km. Galt is a very multicultural area to live in.
