If you are unfamiliar with Walnut Grove's history, it's worth knowing that this small Delta town had been a thriving Japanese and Chinese American community around the turn of the century (thanks to segregation). The owners have restored this interesting piece of history and out has emerged this beautiful Japanese bath house, art gallery, and charming lodgings.Four of us descended last weekend for an overnight and we're already talking about when we can return. Monserrat and her husband were very gracious hosts and answered our pre-visit emails in a timely manner. What is offered is so much more than what's described on their website, so be prepared to be taken care of in the most thoughtful wayFor starters, the lodging is charming, unique and very comfortable for four people. Although it is restored in period style, it has the modern conveniences necessary to make the hot summers bearable (air con in the kitchen and lots of fans). I can attest that the bed was very comfortable, with none of that weird sagging in the middle which forces you to brace yourself from rolling somewhere unwanted. The friends on futon declared it to be very comfortable as well, and we enjoyed lounging in the living area and kitchen area, which is quite spacious. Our time in the bath was extremely relaxed and enjoyable. Beautiful surroundings, with high wood ceilings, mood music, and so much more. You get to use not only the bathing area and steam room, but also to relax in the gallery itself--what indulgence! We were offered ice cold drinks and use of the many different salts, though we were too chicken to test them out. Walnut Grove itself is small, though worth a walk around the neighborhood. Decent pizza and breakfast are within walking distance, though bring your own drinks or snacks to maximize time in the charming upstairs rooms or in the garden. This is truly a hidden gem of the Delta and while spending the night isn't a prerequisite for using the bath house, we found it added greatly to our enjoyment and experience.
