Me and my husband made the hike to the little fairytale church and monastery when the snows were deep, but sun shining almost all the time and temperature was comfortable. We drove to the highest point in the village below that the 4x4 would take us and then set out along the road. As long as we were on the road (not drivable in winter) it was really easy going in spite of the snow, then we decided to take the foot path and it got a little heavier as the incline increased dramatically. On the way down the steep incline helped though as we just sat down and slided. The views going up/down are breathtaking. The church is truly a place of worship and the feeling to come into the dark space heated by a fireplace after the bright snow outside was really special. We brought some fruit for the monks who have no way of getting supplies except from hiking in the deep snow up and down and we were given candles, some icons and postcards as thank you. I should mention that me and my husband are both quite athletic, but anyone in reasonable physical condition can make the hike even in winter, but maybe stay with the car road all the way up.

The Gergeti Trinity Church is on top of a 2200m mountain in the middle of wild nature and beautifulcaucasus mountains. It's also in front of Mt. Kazbeg, and once there you have beautiful views up to Mt. Kazbeg and in the valleydown to Stepandsminda. The place is unique in the middle of wild untouched natureand on top of a mountains you really feel remote and come down there to relax andto feel the inspiration and be close to heaven. The ride up there with special 4wheel driven carsis a real adventure but if you are once in Stepandsminda this is a real must to do.Picures from Gergeti Trinity Church and of the mountains there are beautiful. Must do, don't miss it.

For any traveler to the Caucasus region, you will come across no lack of churches. Old churches, new churches, a church here, a church there, a church just about everywhere...But this church, my friend, is one to not miss. My partner and I were in the midst of severe church fatigue when we arrived in Stepantsminda/Kazbegi, and thought about sitting this one out, and we are very glad that we didn't. The road to get to the chuch was worth the trip alone, in an old '70s 4x4 Lada with a Russian guide used to ferrying folks over and back across the Russian-Georigan border to Vladikavkaz in Ossetia. He was a character in and of itself, and we had to get out of the car to push a few times to get his old rig up the mountain.Once we arrived, however, we were rewarded with the most spectacular views of the Greater Caucasus behind this humble, ancient church. We were able to get some of the best shots of the entire trip from the church, so it is especially not to be missed if you are a photographer of any kind, from iPhone to DSLR.The monks inside the church were very kind as well, and hawked pieces of tile from the church before it was restored - a very decent souvenir for 5 lari ($3 USD) if you ask me.Don't miss this church, it was amazing!

MUST SEE place in Georgia!Gergeti trinity church (XIV century) is located on a top of mount, near the town Kazbegi. You can walk (about 1-2 h.) from the village through the forest (there is one more way, but I won't recommend it) or use a local transport from Kazbegi (Stefantsminda). The view from church is breathtaking. P.S. Near Kazbegi is a village "Arsha". There you can have very delicious khinkali, khachapuri, mushrooms etc. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of that little restaurant. But it is in the lefthand side of village when you go from Kazbegi to Arsha :)

The church is located Kazbegi on higher altitude it has a breath taking view, away from civilization, very scenic view. A local cabby can drive you up to the church cost is 40 Lari (GEL) , but be aware they drive a very old car and they manage to drive it safely through their expertise.Young travelers can make a TREK trip to the location.

Amazing place which is definetly at the top of "A MUST VISIT" list. You can walk from the village on foot or use any of locals' transport - they offer to take you to the top with their Niva's. And he view at the top... breathtaking, amazing - not enough words to express the feeling when you sit on the ground and you see all village below your feets and walls of mountains in the front.

Without any doubt these church has the most beautiful settings of a church in Georgia. You can reach it with a 2 hours steep hike or you rent a taxi in Stepantsminda for about 20 bucks. For photographers the church is not the main target but it is embedded in the landscape. You should surround the church in some distance and you will find hundreds of fine motifs with the church but with the landscape. Long lens owners who stay more than some hours shall try it also from the other side of the valley where are also some ideal places to catch the sunrise.

We walked up a jeep track, a 450-meter elevation gain, to the highest (2200 meters) old church in Georgia, and hired an old man in an old Soviet Lada for a precipitous ride downward.

Walking up would be too difficult for most except the young but walking down is fun. Once at the top the view is beautiful.

Beautiful church stading at the top of a mountain where you can see the whole stepansminda valey ! must go by 4x4 if you take the "road" Possible to hire horses in the village for a ride up to church. Walking to the place is a full day activity

Margolainen

Consider horsebackriding to the top, if trakking is not an option, cars DO get up there. Find a local guide. Lades: bring a scarf for the head

We saw people climbing the mountain to reach this point and even with a 4X4 vehicle it isn't easy, but the scenic view is worth it.

This is the place that everyone goes to see when you are in Stepantsminda (Kazbegi). From the town, you can walk following the earth road for 1.45 hours, going up 500 metres high; if you take some paths in the wood that cut the road, you can go there in one hour. The walk is easy, passing through the shepherd's village of Gergeti and arriving in a spectacular mounty landscape. Mount Kazbek is over there, Trinity Church is small but well preserved, a jewel I could say. You can sit down on the grass and enjoy the sun, looking to Great Kaukasus all around you.
