An excellent area to visit if you're interested in history wth a really good collection of artefacts all displayed well.Staff, including volunteers, are friendly and helpful, and passionate about their work.Really good value and a great day out.
A Lovely day spent with a mate exploring Portside. So Much to see. Maryborough should be so proud of the history and, more-importantly, a beautiful little part of the world hidden down by the river.
Friendly volunteers operationg a fantastic museum. Did not realise that this area has so much importance to the hertiage of our country.
Took the guided tour of this wonderful historic area. Our Guide was very informative. The buildings are well preserved. The tour takes 1.1/2 hours. More info could be given on the port side buildings but of course there is not enough time and the guides do a wonderful job and are totally voluntary.
Takes you on a trip down memory lane when the buildings and architecture had a wonderful soul about them. This gorgeous precinct backs onto Queens Park which was prized to be the first botanical gardens in Queensland. It's cute meandering pathways, amongst beautifully maintained gardens overlooking the Mary River is definately worth a visit. There's even a locomotive that operates in the Park on Thursday...definately worth a visit!
Walking around the historical sector in Maryborugh reminded me of being in Sydney's Rocks district with all the beautiful historical buildings and quaint museums offering very well constructed interpretation of Maryboroughs past. There is a lot to be learned from browsing through the Bond Store Customs Museum or the Military Museum opposite. For a splash of modern culture slip into Gatakers Art Space which is a gallery to match any in our urban cities. You can do an organised walking tour in the mornings with a local guide. Thursdays sees the markets inthe CBD so its possible to do both on the same day. Keep aneye on Maryborough threough the year for its Pub Fest and Relish Food festival.
Portside has been created to link all the varied spaces and activities that Maryborough has to offer.....and its been done well!Early settlers came via ship direct to the Port of Maryborough with Sydney being the only other port of call. Maryborough was the port for Gympie Gold, produce from the Bundaberg area, and in turn was the "storehouse" for goods, furniture and the like coming in, as well as people of course. Portside combines the historical with the existing brilliant engineering skills of our residents with the steam trains, the MaryAnn (have a ride around the parkland) and other uniquely Maryborough activities.
