This authentic Polynesian town was just a short walk down the beach from our hotel and we loved it. There is nothing fancy and only a few shops and maybe two restaurants but on the Saturday we were there they had a fine open-air fruit and vegetable market where only Tahitian was spoken. There is also a local "supermarket" where the natives shop for almost everything. What more local color could you want?

Many people might find this town to be far too sleepy, but we found it to be delightfully mellow. The grocery store here is really the main attraction, with some souvenir stores, veg and fruit stands, and a restaurant or two. The roulettes aren't open until sundown, but as it gets a bit dark, those add light, color, and incredible aromas to the town street. Quaint, and that's what makes the whole island so special.

We found what we needed at the Supermarche. There was a little roulette by the beach. There are a few ATMs, car and scooter rental. Quick walk from the La Pita

A place to take in the beautiful peolpe of French Polynesia and their natural friendly and giving life style. Not a town of tourist but a place to relax with the locals on the beach or in the water.

Fare is right on the waterfont, where everything is happening. People fishing, kids flirting, tourist boats and merchant vessels going in and out . . . plenty of roulottes for food . . . a few restaurants . . . and a giant supermarket. A post office with access to Internet. Churches (with a concert if you are lucky). I could walk in the neighborhood (during the day; there are few lights at night). Three auto-rental agencies. ATMs. But very quiet and restful, at least during the season we were there.

A very simple village. Excellent supermarket for stocking up. People were friendly. Not much to do here, so not necessary to spend a lot of time.

The eight charter members of the Land of Goshen Yacht Club just completed two week sailing around four of the Society Islands, and Fare, Hauhine, was one of the highlights. First, this town was about the only place on this French Polynesian island where we could purchase gas and additive for our outboard and access an ATM to withdraw some local currency. That makes it a sailor's "must visit." Second, there is an immense grocery/general store on the main street, and we were able to purchase large bags of ice [895PF] as well as commodities like candy bars, foie gras, smoked fish terrine, fizzy water, and other goods. They had a great deli counter for meats and cheeses and fresh produce. So if you are on a multi-week sailboat charter in the area, this is the one place you want to hit to re-provision. I was also able to purchase postcard stamps [105PF]and mail postcards to the US at the post office. Our friends rented a car for the day and drove around the island, and e visited the open air craftwork huts and the large artisans showcase to purchase material and necklaces. You can walk to the Pearl Treehouse and purchase high-quality loose and mounted Tahitian pearls, as well. There is an open air community center, and it was fun to sit and watch the local dance academy classes put on student shows. What a great town to walk around in and stretch your sea legs!!
