This is a really fantastic museum with large collections. The problem is that it is ill equipped to handle tourists and most of the collections are in storage and cannot be viewed by visitors. We were able to see the storage rooms because we had a connection with the university. If you don't happen to know anyone you will be shown a very small area with almost entirely ethnographic collections. It has some fabulous ethnographic and tribal artifacts but the displays are very poorly managed and dusty. I would estimate that they rarely see a tourist here and visitors are few. They don't really have the infrastructure to support many visitors or the staff. If you are a tourist and really want to see the storage collections, you could ask, You would probably have to pay a little extra but the enormity of the collections in the back area is staggering.

Always heard of it, but when I went there and saw how wealthy this museum was, I said to myself that I will be there back again. For a small entry fee, you get a look at an rich exhibition of congolese arts and history.

We went two times for see the National Museum. Because the museum is usually closed. Only two days is open. Museum is in the Art Academy garden. Only little 3 saloon. One gallery has musician devices. Second galery about some of masks and sculpture. There is a hairdresser stand for why I understand.Other gallery has 2 pieces of skull. That's all. There is not brochure at English, not a guide. Photo is forbidden. We paid 5 dolars for entry and visited 10 minutes. There was a new built near the road and it will be open of a new museum. But Congo lost their historical things I think. I really sorry about it.

During most of the month of July, I was part of a team that visited several places in the DRC. I want to say that the people of Congo are 10+ on the Trip Advisor scale. The conditions of travel and general level of ordinary comforts is quite a challenge for those of us who are spoiled living in the USA, Europe, or other more developed countries. I would tell you however, to not allow these issues to discourage you from a visit to this incredible country. The southern and central areas along with Kinshasa are quite safe to travel as long as you plan ahead; make certain to have local contacts; and work on your French as English is not a second language. Travel by air to the inner parts of Congo is best supplemented by motorcycle and off road vehicles and I suggest local drivers always! Find your passion and see if you can enjoy that in the DRC! The state dept's of many countries do advise against travel here, but if you can find local contacts, I would still consider for the bold traveler to try the DRC.
