My husband and I stayed at Chicken Gold Camp for 2 1/2 weeks. The Busby family and their staff were like family. They all work very hard at keeping the facility clean, comfortable and fun. It's obvious that they all love what they do. They were very helpful to those of us who were novices at gold mining. The showers, and facilities were always clean. You'll find the best scones in the state right there in Chicken. We are definitely going back. The mining area was really good. We were very satisfied with what we were able to mine...for a couple of rookies. We highly recommend the Outpost.
CLASSY is the best descriptive word for Chicken RV Camp. Stocked with unique "untouristy" souvenirs and items for sale, this clean, very well run and highly organized outpost in the tiny town of Chicken also has an amazing menu of delicious and many times homemade food, hard to come by otherwise in such a remote location. Prices are reasonable and the many activity offerings are musts for travelers. Visits to the relocated Pedro dredge or opportunities to gold pan or go kayaking or even a daily trip up to a gold mine, transportation included, are invaluable experiences. The hard working family behind this jewel of an outpost is friendly, gives great service all the time, generous, and constantly there for your comfort. As Alaskan travelers to this RV park, we go gold mining every summer and would not miss it for the world. YOU MUST NOT MISS CHICKEN RV PARKfor the past five summers a
This is defitinately a destination. You don't just happen on it. Once here it is a neat place to be. There are a couple of campgrounds, plus the Pie Lady has a restaurant plus the 2 campgrounds have restaurants. There is a post office which gets mail 2 times a week by private plane. There is a gold dredge and panning for gold is also available. There is the Chicken Saloon,Liquior store, gift shop, and restaurant which has very good food. We were there for the 4th of July celebration. There was a band and a huge picnic. I do not know where all those folks came from but there was a gaggle of them there.
The drive out to Chicken and our visit was as if we lived back in the gold mining days of Alaska. Gold panning options to choose from, great cafe on the deck for wonderful sandwiches and soup, historical gold mining dredge onsite, walking paths and more to enjoy a full day.
If you have the time and the vehicle to do it, driving Top of The World Hwy to Chicken, Alaska is different and fun.Once there, you will find a tiny outpost with a few stores. The main attraction for us was walking around the dredge and watching people gold pan. You can rent a gold pan and time to use it in the trough provided. They bring the pay dirt to you and you can keep whatever flakes you find. This would be a great family type of activity.
As Pascalle mentions, you can walk around the dredge (a million pound gold dredge that mined Chicken Creek) and all of the associated historic displays for free. But you can also take a great tour through the dredge; and this dredge is one of the most complete dredges open to the public in North America.
Thanks Heleen. Yes, we are remote as much of Alaska is and that is one reason we like it here. And because of our remoteness and living off the grid, there are some things that the community of Chicken can't offer. But we do our best to provide a comfortable and friendly visit for our guests.
We were on the Holland America Gold Rush land tour. Chicken Saloon, Chicken Emporium and Chicken Poop was a pit stop for our bus on the way from Dawson to Tok. Fun stop, great souvenirs. Wish we could have stayed longer. Scenery on the way there was beautiful.
We spent 2 days in Chicken in the RV park. We went gold panning on a claim in the middle of nowhere. We we're taken out on ATV and after being shown how to work the high banker we were left on our own (4 of us). We spent whole day panning and did get gold including a couple of very small nuggets. We had to dig out the earth but it was great fun. The night before on advice from locals we walked down to the airfield to look for moose. We heard one in the water and finally saw it together with a couple of others. Saw one closer up on the second night of our visit Chicken is a unique place and one of a kind
They called it Chicken, because no one could agree on how to pronounce Ptarmigan, and this bird tasted just like chicken. We were in Dawson City, Yukon with our motor home along with our friends in their own motor home. We decide to have lunch in Chicken, and drove 110 kms on the Top-of-the-World-Highway to the border of Alaska, cleared US Customs and drove another 41miles down a gravel road with a lot of hairpin turns. Glad we chose to drive in a car. It was a beautiful, and interesting drive. The Chicken Gold Camp and Outpost is just as we read about it in the tourist info. Too bad it was raining so hard that we could not go panning for gold, but we did end up spending money in the store. Washrooms are very clean. Staff is very knowledgeable and very friendly. The restaurant is more like a food/chip truck. You place your order, pay and they call you when its ready. Good portions for the money. Our food was great. You can sit outside under a roof (pavilion) or there is a room with 3 or 4 tables to sit at. Well worth the stop if you are driving from Dawson to Whitehorse as a different way to go south into British Columbia.
...and some other things from the gift shop, had a great coffee and cookies, looked round the dredger, used the clean but isolated restrooms! Perfect stopover on the way to Dawson City from Tok. Lovely people and a friendly welcome. Best part is that there is NO other place in the world called Chicken. And we've been there!!!
panned for gold, spent some money in all the stores. autographed book by owner Sue. shirts, stuffed animals etc. great homemade pie & brownie-yum. evening went to bar for visiting & drink & have the canon blasted off. visited with locals lots of places to eat if you don't feel like cooking.
We stayed at Chicken Gold Camp for 3 nights in our rented RV as a break on our journey from Tok through to Dawson City via Taylor sand Top of the World Highways. The Gold Camp is great great place to stay (rental cabins & RV park) and visit (Recreational gold panning, Dredge, Cafe, Gift Shop, etc), it isn't all that Chicken has to offer. In addition it is a short walk to the Post Office (a great postmark to have on your holiday postcards) and also there is the downtown area that comprises of a store, liquor store, saloon (with panty cannon) and cafe. The Gold camp also has a field full of old gold mining artifacts, equipment and cabins to explore. Recreationmal gold panning is $15 a day with free dirt (pay lode) and mossies.
We spent 2 days in Chicken and had a great time! Everyone was super friendly and we even found some gold. The food and drinks were great and even though it rained some of the time we really enjoyed ourselves....
Now here is a place that has it all, great food, wonderful people and GOLD. Yes you can be taught how to pan for gold by one of the great local characters who pan yearly for gold on this area.If you travel to or from Dawson City on the Top Of The World Highway Chicken is a special place. We stayed overnight in the campground and walked around the old machines that dot he village site. There is a great little place that serves up excellent fresh baked pie and a cold drink.
