This is the largest lake in Glacier National Park on the East side. The NPS gives boat rides on this lake and the trip is not to be missed.

Have wanted to photograph this iconic lake and finally got to do so. Waited for sunset and got my Wild Goose Island shot I wanted although there were no clouds in the sky so sunset itself was not great. But the light on the mountains as the sun went down was beautiful. Worth a stop for sure!

The road that leads to this beautiful lake is teaming with wildlife. Grizzly and black bear were spotted along the base of the mountains that this road goes past. Then when you round the corner and spot this gorgeous lake, it's breath taking.

This is the first lake you come to when entering the park from the beginning of the east side of "going to the sun road." Amazing!!! Such a great picture taking place. We spent almost all day around the the lake.As you starting going up in altitude you start to get better pics. There were a few people out but it was still amazing. So quiet and you can hear the wind wipping through the hills. Words can't descirbe what it was like!!! Loved it!

the color of the water is this aqua green. Beautiful. Some of the small bushed were starting to color, giving it a fall foliage feel.

Kind of less impressive than Lake McDonald if you are comparing the easily accessible lakes in the park. Which isn't to say that it's not impressive and worth a stop. I'm just saying that if you have time for only looking at one lake or doing one lake cruise, then do it on Lake McDonald over St. Mary Lake. But if you're on the east side of the park and won't make it to the west, this is a fine substitute.

There was a fire in 2006 and you can see where the new growth is coming through. Still very very beautiful.

Take the time to go on a ranger led hike the follows the boat ride across the lake. You will drive by Wild Goose Island and have a great opportunity for photos. The boat ride takes you over to a small falls and then you have the option of taking the extended hike to St. Mary Falls which is well worth it. Make sure you bring water though because it is a warm hike. You are rewarded at the end with beautiful photos of the falls. We loved the combo boat ride and hike.

This is a beautiful lake and should go on the boat ride to hear all of the history of the area and then take the hike to St. Mary's Falls.

You will want to stop at every turn to take a picture. Gorgeous lake. I wish we were here in the summer for a boat ride and/or swim. The clear water with mountain peaks is breathtaking!

I got an amazing mirror photo of the glacier/mountains in the lake in the afternoon when the sun was not overhead. Rent a kayak and enjoy the lake. No waves.

We were fortunate enough to be able to walk up to the ticket counter without reservations and hop on the boat/guided ranger tour which left in 20 minutes. Just enough time to get our packs, go to the bathroom behind the ticket counter and hop on board. The ranger and captains were very informative and the hike to St. Mary Falls was easy and a decent RT length. The Falls were incredible!

See my description under Baring Falls. There's a nice short hike along the lake to Sunrise motel. I had to wait for my boat ride and I really enjoyed sitting at the pier.

We took the boat tour and guided Ranger hike to St. Mary Falls. Though a little slow on the way to the Falls for our tastes in terms of pace, the Ranger greatly enhanced our experience with all kinds of useful tidbits and info.Clearly, he was passionate about such a magical place as Glacier. We power walked the way back to the boat and enjoyed the trip back to Rising Sun. It was well worth the $17 per person.
