Old Port has such a homey feel. One can wander around the area to shop in a variety of businesses, visit numerous attractions, eat in quaint and/or well-known establishments, stroll along the waterfront or its many streets, and so much more. Parking can be a real hassle though so it's best to find a parking garage. Sometimes one has the sense of stepping back into a former historical period when in Old Port. It's a great place that I personally greatly enjoy visiting.
Lovely old area with plenty of bars and restaurants, a nice waterfront with paths to walk along and great visitor centre. Only slight negative is that there seemed to be a lot of vagrants round the area, more than we saw in New York but generally felt a safe area.
Walking in Old Port makes me feel connected to America's history. Walk up any street from Commercial (the harbor side) and the small shops, narrow streets and narrower alleys instantly speak of those who came before us. There are still cobblestone streets and restaurants and shops that are upstairs or downstairs. The streets are windy and sometimes a little oddly placed but everything is filled with charm and grace. Even the touristy t-shirt shops seem a tad more sweet than in many other cities. The greatest gems of the area are the architecture. The old colonial and federal styles call out from building to building. There are even some Victorian beauties as one gets west of Fore Street. All these buildings are being beautifully preserved and very well respected by modern day Portland. The shopping in Old Port is fun, too. There are wonderful boutiques and they are filled with wonderful and helpful staff. Even Reny's should not be overlooked as it houses great bargains. The restaurants and pubs are plentiful as is their welcome and fare.Walking along the wharves is also a great way to appreciate a large part of the town's economy. Poke your head inside of the fish monger's stores. Look at the fishing boats and watch a boat of any size moor at a dock. These are simple pleasures that last forever. What a great place to spend a long weekend or maybe a lifetime.
Old Port is a great area to visit on a sunny day to shop and watch the water. We did not experience the nightlife, but I suspect that it's a relatively young scene. If you are in Portland, it's worth a stop!
This area is huge and has something for everyone! The shops are all very nice and the employees were friendly. Very cool area to walk around.
Perfect place to go with your significant other! Lots of local vendors and cute shops line the cobblestone streets. Plenty of restaurants too. The water is nearby also of you want to catch a ferry or cruise ship tour. Wouldn't take small children, not a lot to entertain them. Wonderful experience.
A very interesting and vibrant port that can even entertain large cruise ships. Lots of interesting and unique shops with great items and Delicious food. Can easily be entertained for several hours and you'll be eager to return
Friend and I decided to make a quick visit to the ocean after a few days of hiking in the White Mountains. Portland seemed like a nice place with where we expected we would find some live music. Rather disappointed. All the bars we encountered were sports bar with big TVs.Not very many interesting boutiques or things to see walking around the portCheapest hotel room we found was 289 a night.... We just got back in the car and drove back to New Hampshire for a cosy night under the stars.
We spent the day here starting with breakfast and went non stop until we had a fabulous time at Demillos. Great day in the Old Port,
There are all kinds of stores and shops in this harbor/wharf area. We especially liked one of the kitchen stores facing the waterfront. There are many places to eat and at night all of the pubs and clubs come to life about 10pm! there are some public parking lots but if you stay in the area as we did at Holiday Inn Portland by the bay you can walk to this area very easily. But be warned if you are an avid shopper as we were bring a tote bag or buy from a store that has larger bags with handles to make the trip back to your hotel easier and lighter. So many stores, glad for my credit card bill that we didn't visit them all!
Nice area to walk around in and lots of different restaurants to choose fromShopping is good unique finds
The area is small and LOADED with places to eat/drink and shop. Good way to spend a couple of hours wandering. The architecture was beautiful, but I wouldn't consider this a destination, more of a quick stop. We did have some gelato at Gorgeous and it was fantastic! Dark chocolate was truly rich and the gorgeous flavor was delicious too (vanilla with caramel and choc chips). A medium cup is about $4 and so worth it!
It was mine and my wife's first time to Maine. After a week in the Mountains, we stayed the night in Portland to catch a plane the following morning to regretfully return home. We had lunch, walked around and shopped for t shirts and what not.My first impression was that of...uh...where the heck are we gonna park? So- we drove for a good 30 minutes and visited several parking garages (which are VERY expensive) and a few lots between $10.00- $20.00 for all day parking. We gave up and found a lot for $10.00 near the "Distillery" and walked the town from there. As we walked, we enjoyed the independent shops and restaurants. There were plenty. The locals were nice and the town grew on us quickly. We really enjoyed our time here. We will be back for sure!Tips: As soon as you get into town, pic the first $10.00 lot you see. Don't waste your time finding better places for less money. Also, if you wait until after 4pm, the lot prices are $5.00!But local...eat local...lots of great little shops...Explore!
My wife and I had a small dish each of Whiskey Chocolate/Gorgeous Gelato and Dark Chocolate/Panacotta. Great price (3.25 each for a small dish that was totally satisfying while still leaving room for a lobstah roll later) and delicious. If you really like chocolate, the Dark stuff was great; the whiskey (actually, Jack Daniels sour mash) is a little more delicate, but the smoke and the sweetness of the mash comes through. The Gorgeous is a rich mix of caramel and chocolate, and the Panacotta is a great blend as well. Service was excellent and our server immediately suggested to us (and to others who followed us) the possibility of a 50-50 mix that we took him up on. The next time we are in Portland, we are stopping here again!!!
We had a great time visiting the old port. Little shops and restaurants everywhere. We found parking fairly easily. You can walk everywhere once in the old port.
