Visited this site years ago and was amazed at the size. Interesting to learn about the process and watch the trucks. Recently saw it from the air as we flew into SLC. So impressive. I think boys would live the big trucking equipment.

Haven't visited there for a while but when we took our younger family at the time, it was a great experience. I understand now that they have improved their surroundings.

The 2d largest open-pit copper mine in the world experienced a significant earthquake. The tourist center was destroyed and operations were shut down. We are all waiting to see how long it will take to resume operations. Mother nature strikes again!

it slid off the mountain and is now rubble in the bottom under millions of tons of earth. Butterfield canyon is also closed and fenced, new fence and they wont let you even walk up the closed road. nor ride a bike to get away from the city. at on time you could go up on a ATV or snow machine. not any longer, they found so much gold and copper up there they don't want anyone to go up there. how much land are they gona need in the future?

A giant hole. It is something to behold, that there could be this much earth moved, and this much ore and wealth brought to Utah. dont like the left overs much but it is the part of the deal. Worth the look..

The copper mine is located on the south western edge of the Salt Lake Valley. Not conveniently located, but definitely worth the trip. The copper mine is amazing. My young boys loved watching the massive trucks travelling into and out of the mine. The small museum is interesting and informative.

The machinery, the noise, the whole experience is worth it. Remember to check the times of the mine as it is not open often.

This is a great place for boys and girls to see the big machines at work. I would take a class, especially a home school group. The tractors are amazing.

Well if you are from out of state you need to see this place. When I was growing up I was told it was the biggest man made hole in the world and you can see it from space I also remember the town that is under the tailing pile the towns name was Lark

Where else in the world can you go to see a hole in the ground large enough to be visible from outer-space? Well I am here to tell you, nowhere! Kennecott Utah Copper's Bingham Canyon Mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in a open-pit mine that is over 0.75 miles deep and 2.5 miles wide! The mine itself covers an area of more then 1900 acres and according to Kennecott, it is the world's largest man-made excavation! Those are some pretty impressive figures for a big hole in the ground. Visiting Bingham Canyon Mine is very interesting and well worth your time. The on-site visitor center provides a great history of mining in the area, discusses the relevance and value of mining in our everyday lives, and has lots of interesting historical photos and artifacts to check out. Everyday we use products that are the products of mines around the world--the computers we use, our phones, our soaps, toothpastes and shampoos. In fact, chances are good that the majority of the products in your home or office were once dug out of a mine.If you haven't seen the world's largest man made hole in the ground, you need to go!

The scale of it is mind-boggling - but it's not like they try to impress you - the trucks with tires larger than a single-family home, the hole is earth so big you can see it from space - are all necessities of modern mining operation. The museum is informative, and the short movie they play there tries its best too - but let's face it, it's mostly company propaganda, trying to down-play their environmental impact. Still, worth your time.

Great museum displays, good video, and you can see live blasting if you are lucky in your timing. Lots of parking, big lot. Enjoyed the gift shop, too.
