We went on a weekend morning very interesting lots of history and interesting facts we were unaware of.

We had walked past this Cemetery on a Ghost Tour of New Haven. It's located right around the amazingly beautiful architectural (and intellectual) sanctuary known as 'Yale'. The Tour Guide talked about highlights of the Cemetery, which were great, but, it would have been even nicer to see it up close and personal, in the daytime (lets face it, what Cemetery is NOT a little bit creepy at NIGHT?!?!). Many famous people are buried there and I find it intriguing to look at and read old headstones, which often is all that is 'left' from our Forefathers. Besides the fact that you can see that it is very well kept.

For a pleasant and contemplative walk, alone or with a companion, leave the hustle of New Haven's streets and take a walk around this beautiful cemetery. In all seasons of the year, the cemetery is an oasis of calm, and you might find yourself in front of a tomb stone of a historic figure, a scientific legend, a Yale President, or a member of New Haven's founding families.

This cemetery is walkable but jammed, from the markers originally from the old Center Church burial yard to recent monuments for Yale luminaries and prize winners. You don't have to be a genealogist to enjoy and learn these stones.

Besides being a quiet, shady place to wander if you want to get away from the crowds of the University area, this cemetery has a lot of famous folks. For a biologist like me, Dana and Silliman, as well as Othniel Marsh, of Bone Wars fame . My wife was excited about Lyman Beecher, Eli Whitney, and Noah Webster and Roger Sherman. Stones go back over 300 years. There is a map available at the information desk. No fee. A must for history buffs.

Great place to view a few notables, small enough to walk entire cemetery. Clean with wonderful and helpful care takers. Loved it!

This was a stop on the New Haven Ghost Walk. Lots of history here. Visited at night. My pictures picked up lots of orbs.

Make sure you stroll thru the Grove Street Cemetery while walking around New Haven. It's embedded right in the middle of the Yale University Campus area and contains a lot of old graves. Stop in the office for a map to the "famous" people buried there. The only famous person I knew was Eli Whitney - inventor of the cotton gin....the others were more locally famous (statemen, musicians, etc).Worth the time to wander thru for a half hour.

Although it's not quite up to the beauty of some other NE cemeteries, Grove Cemetery has numerous interesting gravestones, many from the 1600s.

The volunteer guide gave us a free tour. She was a retired history teacher who gave us the whole history of the founding of New Haven as well as the history of the cemetery and cemetery traditions.

Very Interesting bit of history here encapsulating the beginnings of New Haven CT. If you love history you will relish this 1630's treasure

This is a beautiful old cemetery with graves of the famous and near famous. My personal is favorite is a stone for Phyllis Brown Sandine, marked with the words "What a Woman!"

Lovely place for a walk while as the leaves change colors. Be sure to stop at the little center at the front of the cemetery to get a map and learn a bit about who's buried there. Beautiful cemetery.

This cemetery, still in private hands, has a remarkable array of the famed and the celebrated from centuries past. There is a free guide which will direct you to some of the many distinguished folks buried within its lovely walled grounds - Eli Whitney, Declaration of Independence signer Roger Sherman, and scores of former Yale presidents. It's elegantly maintained, and a lovely quiet spot for a sunny afternoon's stroll - and directly adjacent tot he Yale campus.
