allentown art museum

I visited here on a Sunday with my girlfriend; admission is free on Sundays. The museum has three different floors and the selections are very good. This isnt the largest museum of art out there, but it is the best one in the Allentown area.

I had to write a paper for my humanities class about a museum and I was not looking forward to going but once I got there, I REALLY had a great time! The artwork was beautiful and the day that I was there, they had a couple dancing and other people honoring the Hispanic culture. They even have a section specifically for the children to play and do arts and crafts, while the adults wander the museum. It was free to get in so it was pretty crowded but still a very enjoyable experience. I would DEFINITELY go back. The staff was friendly and pleasant. They have a gift shop, that was a bit expensive and also a small cafe.

Very nice gallery with interesting visiting exhibits. It's a shame it doesn't seem to get as much traffic as it deserves

Sunday it is free to get into the museum. I have taken my children here many times. On the third floor they offer interactive crafts for the children to experience the museum in a hands on way. Great time for the family and a great place to take children!

The Allentown Art Museum is worth the stop. Besides the regular showcase paintings they bring in great exhibits throughout the year. You can also host an event at the Museum with a separate room for meetings or banquets.

Well stocked and run for a small town museum. There is a large religious gallery upon entering the museum and a fine American artist gallery on ground floor. Several well-heeled and successful local families have contributed art, time and money to ensure the success of the museum. Do visit if in town.

As I stated in past reviews of other venues, I am always looking for something free or inexpensive to do with my grandchildren on weekends. Usually I take them out in the Allentown/Bethlehem area where they live. I do lots of internet searches to find something new, exciting, different, and stimulating.Two weeks ago, I found that the Allentown Art Museum offers a free Sunday program for kids from 12:30 to 3:30. The museum becomes kid-centered, with activities ranging from a treasure hunt for the older kids to kiddie tables set up on the 2nd floor with arts and crafts, and even building blocks on the first floor in the Kress Gallery along with kiddie books on architecture and building things. Both of my grandsons (5 & 6) absolutely loved playing with those blocks, and really would have stayed there all afternoon, but the woman in charge of the room did not seem to be really kid-friendly, which is the only reason I am not giving the visit 5 stars. She was anxious to get them out of the room and continually pointed out all the activities elsewhere in the museum as I was watching the boys build their masterpieces.We got the hint and headed upstairs to check out the arts and crafts area. The Crayola Learning Center was closed due to lack of staff, which was a shame. There were 3 kiddie tables set up for the kids to do specific crafts at each: one was to stencil words with paint markers, one was to make paper blocks that had to be glued together after coloring the letters on the sides, and the third was to write a poem on a folder that contained helpful guidelines. Also in this area are a large chalkboard, a drying rack to hold the painted pieces, and a play area for little ones, containing big soft blocks, some Lego-type blocks, puzzles and books. The treasure hunt was good fun but definitely for older kids. You are given a paper showing a particular piece of art in the museum, and you must go find it and answer some questions about it that are on the sheet. Complete it, and return it for a prize of maybe some markers or crayons or scissors to take home. It's a nice idea, and gives you and the kids a chance to actually look at the art, understand it, and get inspiration for them to do their own artwork at home.If your kids need to use the rest room, by all means use the ones on the 2nd floor near the Crayola Learning Center! They are fabulous for the little ones. The walls are painted with terrific murals, and there are step stools for the kids to actually reach the sinks. Aside from the kiddie part, I would like to say that the museum itself is just lovely. The soft lighting accentuates the artwork, and the pieces are beautiful. The pop-art which was on display was very entertaining, and being from Philadelphia, I immediately recognized the work of Robert Indiana from our iconic "LOVE" sculpture in Center City Philly.This is a lovely Sunday afternoon rainy-day activity to do with your kids. The staff was very helpful, pointing us to where we wanted to go. We are definitely returning soon, if they'll have us...my youngest grandson saw his first nude sculpture and loudly commented on it, to our embarrassment!

I love taking my little Princess to the Allentown Art Museum on Sunday. She has met the jazz singer Janet Lawson during a Jazz section. She also met Author of the book "Smile" by Raina Telgemeir . Both of them were so sweet and pose with my daughter and I took their photos that I treasure.I also bought the book "Smile" for my daughter that day. We also met her husband Dave Roman they were both doing a section on comics. My daughter loves the Arts and attends the Baum School of Arts and The Allentown Art Museum also provides for children and family to learn and love the Arts.

I'm far from an art expert but I know what I like when I see it, and what I love about this museum is its unpretentious accessibilty to works of art that range from highbrow to obscure. Friendly, helpful staff, easy access, very cool facility and reasonable fees, too. Check it out when the museum hosts a cool "pop art" or modern art exhibit if you can. Well worth a few hours of your time. Go!

A little hidden gem... did not expect it to be so interesting and stayed for hours. Nice touch is the gift shop and also the little cafe, good food.

Now as you've seen in my other reviews when you've been to The Met, the Louvre and the Hermitage this isn't that....but nor is it meant to be. The "of heaven and earth" collection and the prior Lautrec exhibits are WELL worth a visit. It's a place that you can't spend days passing through but it's worth a couple visits. One to examine the permanent exhibitions and then of course to always revisit during special exhibits. It's only through our patronage that we can expect large more well know collections to pass through. I remember when the Vermeers were shown at the Frick Collection in NYC as just the example of how you can have this happen. To be able to see post impressionism, art nouveau and now Italian renaissance in Allentown is a great testimony to what the Allentown museum is trying to bring to the Lehigh Valley

I enjoyed this museum very much, but my experience was marred by getting a parking ticket in a lot marked for visitors where, it seems, only SOME of the spots are for visitor parking. When I complained the security guard said he gave a lot of tickets that day. Obviously poorly marked!

It is a nice size Museum for a afternoon visit, the standart paintings are exceptional for a Museum this size. They get good exhibits that rotate on a regular bases.

Went with mom to see OF HEAVEN AND EARTH: 500 Years of Italian Painting from Glasgow Museums, glad we previewed the art before we caught the guided tour of this, made it easier to see details up close rather than in the crowd. Also worthwhile are ongoing collections of American art, and caught the quilts installment as well. Highly recommend a visit to this museum, and good soup & sandwiches in the cafe as well!

Must admit the free admission for the summer drew us in but the remodel is fantastic!!! Will be back in the fall!!
