Just off the beaten path, tucked away on the other side of Milford lake, is the little town of Wakefield. The town had to be relocated due to the lake flooding the original site of Wakefield. Locals who relocated and left the area donated items to this museum. Former residents, or their descendants have continued to preserve the local history by bringing or sending items home. Furniture, clothing, doctors and office equipment, an old player piano, Military history, Native American displays...and this STILL doesn't cover it! This is a great opportunity to show the kids how grandma or great-grandma lived. All this is lovingly attended by dedicated volunteers. And, if you're lucky, you'll get a personal tour like we did! Check it out!!!

Less than 5 miles off 77 highway near Milford Lake, this was a delightful find. The museum has six rooms filled with collections-- spanning mid-1800s to present. The settings include Wild Bill Hickock's trunk, a country store, a country school, a period kitchen, local military history, Native American history, African artifacts (brought back by missionaries from the area), antique telephone and other technology collections. The museum houses Former Ks governor William H. Avery's desk and other memorabilia. The museum also has an extensive genealogy research area. Lots of interactive areas/exhibits for kids. Cute gift store with local handicrafts. Worth a visit if you're in the Flint Hills.
