I always bring our out of town visitors to this museum. It's a great place to see masterworks and new art. They have a smattering of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and various thematic shows. The building boasts a wonderful auditorium, which I hope they would use more often. It's a beautiful room. Of course, the space is limited as they have more art than they can ever display, so it is wise to check them out periodically to see the various exhibitions. This is the home of the Richmond School of painting, and there are marvelous examples of it in their collection.

We had read about this tiny "museum," which is in fact a small art gallery. We didn't have much time, and as it turned out, we didn't need much. There are only several rooms and corridors, but they are well worth the visit for those who appreciate late 19th century American Midwest art. The likes of William Merritt Chase and Childe Hassam are represented, but we discovered artists we had previously not known who delighted us with their beautiful scenes and portraits. All you need is less than hour...don't bypass this wonderful treat.

The only reason I'm giving this a rating of "3" is because the size of the museum is quite small and a bit limited. However, it is a very nice place and the display/works are well done, interesting and do have the local flare that you sometimes do not get in a large city art museum. That being said, if you are really into art museums, I would drive the extra hour to Indianapolis (or Dayton) and go the their art museums.

The local coffee shop/consignment shop staff directed us to this museum or we would have missed it. So glad they did. The building alone is wonderful to see and the paintings were excellent. They have some very fine oil paintings. The founding fathers of Richmond really had some foresight to collect this art at the turn of the century. The lady at the desk was very cordial. Easy parking. Richmond was just a darling town. I would have liked to explore it more but we were just passing through.

The Richmond Art Museum is a true hidden gem in Richmond. Free admission. However, a donation is suggested. The museum is located adjacent to the high school which I thought was interesting. When I walked in I was impressed with the lighting along the ceiling. It grabbed my attention! There is a nice collection of 19th and 20th century art. The William Merritt Chase self portrait was awe inspiring. Be sure to ask about the story behind the portrait. I highly suggest a visit to this Art Museum to anyone visiting the Richmond area. Note – they are closed on Saturday.
