I have been here twice, both times were disappointing. You come onto the grounds and see a beautiful entrance, then it falls to pieces. The tasting room is a musty smelly cellar with very little room, the wines are not on par with the other vineyards in the area, and the staff is cool and unwelcoming. I felt like they wanted me to hurry and taste and get out. Won't go back and would not recommend

This vineyard was in the middle of a few other so we decided to check it out. It seems to be newer to the market and it shows but has a lot of potential. Dana provided our tasting and she was the highlight of the Venezuelan born but in Italy the last 10 years, we thoroughly enjoyed our time with her. Unfortunately, the wines were only so-so and probably need time to find their way. Tasting room was a bit on the small side and not too special. We recommend keeping an eye on this winery as it matures.

They had some great examples of typical wines with a few interesting varieties. We found the Viognier and the Cabernet Franc to be stand outs. The owners sister was visiting from Italy and she shared a wonderful recipe for an sweet onion reduction to use on cheese and crackers. We've made it twice for family gatherings to rave reviews. This was a fun place to visit.

The tasting room lady was very nice, and she so wanted us to enjoy her wines. But frankly, they weren't good at all. Don't bother!

This estate winery has a huge potential. The property is run down, with the vineyards appearing neglected. After meeting the husband and wife owners, and seeing an aerial photograph of the property and plantings, the potential for this property is amazing. The wine tasting was pleasant with Heide interacting wonderfully with us. The vertical tasting was a nice change, with the varietals being very nice. Malcolm was very entertaining. I hope that this property will realize its full potential. Don't let the initial impression scare you away. Afterwards we were very pleased and will return for the good wine and the wonderful owners.

Several samples of wine were provided with an optional souvenir glass, sweet owner with loads of stories from her travels.

A certain aloof class of tourist that sees themselves as honorary members of the one percent while lacking even a shred of Noblesse Oblige or depth beyond pretty packaging must often truly judge the skills of a great writer by the dust jacket over the book cover. Not far from the remnants of Historic Rockford, once the County Seat of Surry founded in 1790, a winery that has risen from a start up to producing world class wines capable of winning high praises at wine tastings in New York up against hundreds of other wines is remarkable indeed. The Tasting Room is rustic. It was fashioned from a vintage Tobacco Barn ubiquitous in the Piedmont once widely planted with Bright Leaf before Cabernet Franc and Viognier. Vineyards and wine making require the patience of a Saint, the endurance of a Sojourner on a perceived near impossible mission, passion and the unconditional love only a proud Mother and Father could give. The Hutton Vineyards Barbera and Viognier- Pinot Gris vintages are among the most distinctive offerings in the North State and should be both focal point and center of discussion while tasting the surprising wines that often seem to come from a much more mature vineyard. If you seek amusement, fantasy and theatrical backdrops while traveling in North Carolina go to Carowinds. If you are that guy on the train from France to Italy complaining all the way because you don’t understand the garçon, the butter tastes funny, and you think the café is like oil…just stay in town and visit your local theme restaurant where they wear all fifteen pieces of flair. If I were so unreceptive and made no effort to understand the many accents that seasons the landscape of an ever greater cosmopolitan marketplace I would lose over half of my business. In closing I have never read a review of a winery that lamented the fact that the ambient wasn’t that of the Playboy Club and never once mentioned the wine or the care and dedication involved in bringing more choices in sought after wines to the Piedmont of North Carolina.

We visited the Hutton Vineyards the other day, on a trip through the Vadkin Valley Vineyards. I was expected it to be a very small tasting room, and it was. In the bottom of a converted garage. But we enjoyed it, especially after coming one of the large more well known vineyards in the area where the people doing the tasting seemed disinterested in their job and had simply memorized the wine label! In contrast, the person doing our tasting was Heidi Hutton herself and she was very welcoming and knowledgeable. I loved that is was a vertical wine tasting, tasting the 2005 - 2008 Cabernet Francs, as well as other wines. So much fun to really see the way a grape tastes as the vine matures. Finally a winery in the Vadkin not doing super sweet wines at jacked up prices! We ended up leaving with 5 bottles of wine, all fantastically priced at $10 - $12.

The tasting room is not much but the staff and the wines are great.

Each year we make it a point to try and visit 15 - 20 North Carolina vinyards. The rapid growth of various wineries throughout NC is really something to marvel at. We hope to eventually be able to say we've visited every location, but we know that will take some time. With that in mind I had discovered the Hutton vinyards website after looking for more locations to visit. Since we never had visited the Hutton location before, we made it a point to visit during our trip there in October 2011. We even had to email the owners to get precise directions to input into our GPS unit because the address they listed on their website could not be found by our Magellan GPS unit..We built up our anticipation big time about visiting this place. After all, when you read the story at how Hutton Vinyards came to be, you're just dying to visit. The coat of arms representing Huttons Vinyards also brings up all kinds of imaginative speculation as to what you're going to encounter. But this is where the anticipation (and assumptions) grind to a screeching halt. When we first arrived, we had to drive through some red mud (it had rained earlier) and made a few turns here and there. When we arrived at the wine tasting area, we were aghast at what we found. Hutton uses what looks like an old garage (with a basement) as their tasting area. It looks old and very utilitarian - and nothing about it reminds you about wine. OK, so we enter this building, go down some stairs and like I said - a garage with a basement. Nothing was decorated - very bland - the lighting was bad (I could go on and on). Everyone in our party was absolutely disappointed - it was very anti-climactic. There were a few other utilitarian type of buildings there, along with a double wide mobile home. But what really put the icing on this "sour-cake" was that rather than having someone there who was very knowledgeable about the wines, a Hispanic woman arrived (very friendly though) - who did not speak very good English - to hold the wine tasting. I tried asking her to tell us about the wines, and other than "people like this, or people like that one," she was no help whatsoever. In addition, there was a little radio playing rock music, very, very loud at the top of the stairs. It was a huge distraction and I had to ask her several times to please turn it down somewhat. The trip turned out to be a small nightmare really.Although the wines weren't bad (it was hard to really gauge their quality because she opened up bottles that were just about empty, and poured the remaining few drops into our glasses), we wound up just not buying anything - only because of the horrible surroundings. In fact, I just got so disgusted that I got up and left and returned to the car until the other folks arrived back (nobody bought anything and shook their heads in disgust at the surroundings). So for us, this Hutton vinyards was a huge bust - a total disappointment. And the bad thing about it all was that we were soooo looking forward to visiting this location. But folks, if you've tried other wineries (we've visited 48 of them so far), even the smallest have better decorated and more suitable wine tasting facilities than this utilitarian garage/basement scenario that Hutton had set up. Remember, a wine tasting environment has to put you in the mood for tasting...and subsequently to buy if need be. So all I can state here is what we've experienced after anticipating a wonderful visit. Never again though......
