Our friends drove us to Jackson and the first thing of note we saw was Saint Sava's, which compelled me to jump out of the car and being photographing. I wish I could have spent a day on those grounds, but my crew were patiently waiting for me and I didn't want to be more of annoyance, so shoot. There's lots to do and see in Jackson, and then we drove to Volcano. All of this area is good a day trip.

We were driving into Jackson and saw this white church on the hill surrounded by a graveyard and just had to visit since I'm a photographer. We were surprised to find it a Serbian church and graveyard. Almost every name ended in "vich" and there was even a placard that read "miner's graves" so I'm assuming they came over during the gold rush? It was built in the late 1800's and is beautifully situated on a hill near historic downtown. Definitely worth a visit but a bit of a climb up a steep hill on cement.

I live close by, and several times a year, they fire off some very loud guns, or small canons, late in the evening. It always surprises me, but doesn't bother us. I say party on!

It all started in 1995 when Belgrade iconographer was asked to paint frescoes and icons inside the church. Thirteen years later, 2008, he completed his job. Today, you don't need to go to Byzantine Europe to see this important religious and historical artwork.

We always enjoy stopping by here to see the beautiful church and to commemorate the Serbians who were part of the history of Jackson. Most people don't know the history and it's very interesting to see some of the older graves dating back to the 19th century with names of Serbs who were still born under the Austro-Hungarian empire, before WWI. Also, Serbian miners were very important to the time. If you have a hard time walking or climbing stairs, this may be a difficult place to visit.

Beautiful building. Historical. Very nice art work.

The correct name is St Sava, and this pretty little church was built in 1894. It was the first Serbian Orthodox church in the US. It sits about a half mile outside of the old part of downtown Jackson, and there is plenty of parking across the street. The church is located on a small hill and is surrounded by the cemetery. It was interesting to stroll around and read all the unusual names on the headstones. We did not try to enter the church, as it was Sunday afternoon and even though we did not see anybody, we didn't want to disturb any parishioners who might be inside. We enjoyed our brief and pleasant visit here.
