This grand historic library has it all - several floors of books, a cafe, periodical reading room and a little store.
Unique building. Good selection. If you live close by, I would definitely recommend this cozy library. I had been there ones.
Portland is known for it's many libraries. Not just books anymore....CDs, DVDs, blu-ray, magazines and many more. There is a lot of history in the downtown location. I recommend taking the short tour they offer.
This library has it going on!! IT has classical architecture as its theme, it is very pleasing to the eye. It is not overwhelming but it has a majestic masculine stance and its second floor plaza is especially impressive. As are its several reading rooms. The technology here is top notch as well.
If you want to take a break around downtown head into the library for a quick break check out the art work and the architecture. Beautiful building and great open space. The building has a great collection of books and has a huge circulation. I love this library for the plethora of music and musical scores.
First of all, it is a beautiful building, that was updated in the 90s, and they did a fantastic job. There is a lot on offer here, and it is convenient to "order" the books/music/movies online and then pick them up when they're available. If they do not have a book you want, they will get it for you, free of charge, from another library.Staff here is helpful and knowledgeable. They're game to help find a book if you're not sure exactly what you're looking for.The only downside (?) is that this is a haven for the homeless population. I think it's wonderful that they have a clean, warm, safe place to go, but it can get a little whiffy inside.
It may not look like it from its Georgian exterior, but the Multnomah County Central Library in downtown Portland, OR is one of the busiest in the country, second only to the New York City Public Library and at about 1/2 the size. Portland really does love its books. The library itself it fairly easy to navigate and offers something for everyone including the blind and disabled. Unlike most public buildings, the library is open on Sundays. Hundreds of free programs are offered throughout the year. It is truly a very special place.
Magnificent libraryThis is a modern change with the times facility, Historic and beautiful old building, we were very impressed.
I always have a dozen or so movies on hold and, since we don't watch them frequently, we never have to rent them. Never can figure out how to do ILL so I just go into my friendly, neighborhood branch and they do it with me.
The best library around! If you love real, printed books look no farther.....and the smell! Does anything else smell like a library?
I live in Clackamas County but West Linn's library while very charming, is small and did not have the Brazillian Portuguese audio tapes I was seeking. Upon the advice of the West Linn library, I was able to secure a Multnomah County library card and check out the educational tapes. The staff at the main library was helpful and very pleasant.
Check out the rare books room, top floor of library. amazing collection including one of the few remaining complete sets of the E.T. Curtis, 40 volume study of Indians of the Northwest: "The North American Indian". The rare book room hours are restricted but can be accessed via the library websitehttps://multcolib.orgthe building itself is worth a visit. For more about Curtis and his 40 volume obsession, See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_S._Curtis
The Multnomah County Central Library is the largest in Portland. You can spend hours browsing, or just relax and enjoy a good read. Some may be bothered by the homeless who use the computers and hangout in the bathrooms - but the staff and the large amount of books available in this library make it worth the encounter. Also make sure to check out the Friends of the Library Bookstore that is attached - many great used books at a good value and supporting a good cause.
The Portland Central Library is a beautiful building with a well arranged book selection. There is a very attractive children's section, a nice little card and gift shop with a bookish theme. In addition, the whole library system is well run; you can reserve almost any book because some library somewhere in the system has it on its shelves!! We are lucky to have such an excellent library system!
Magnificent library.Brought to life with even greater detail with the library tour.A fascinating hour.
