This is a my 15th or so visit to Montpellier and I never pass up a visit to this square. It's one of most beautiful in the south of France if not all of France. It's a great place during the day or evening to sit in a cafe, have a glass of wine and watch the life of Montpellier.

Place de la Comedie is perhaps one of the most famous tourist attractions in the city and this is for a reason. All the surounding buildings are very art nouveau/deco and it always has a very special feel to it. Also the famous fountain itself is a must see and and classic selfie spot. Come here for a nice coffee while you listen to the music played by local musicians.

Nearly all the main streets radiate from this square this is the best starting point for exploring the city, there are lots of side streets with quirky shops as well as the better known ones on the principal pedestrian streets. By all means enjoy a coffee on the cafe terraces but be aware that it most likely to cost you more than in the historic centre behind the square.

This is the main square of the city where people gather for events. It's surrounded by the old theater and building with beautiful facades.

This square is the prettiest of montpellier:) next to the opera and some amazing places to have "petit dejeuner", lunch of some crepes:)

The centre of the city; very pretty and open with some nice restaurants, a close walk from most things (especially the biggest art gallery and the Jardin des Plantes). Montpellier is a hidden gem!

You have to at least have a coffee here just to enjoy doing a bit of the "people watching"! ..so many strolling through, different nationalities;more locals outside of sulmmer time. It's big and airy, very near everything else, like the "Centre Historique", or the big shop on the corner, Monoprix.Full of restaurants and cafés; very french! - a covered market, just 2 minutes up a street just at the corner, La rue de la Loge. and just round the corner from the Musée Fabre, five minutes from L'Antigone !I have a coffee or tea there about once a week, as I live in Montpellier,or a bit further along, same place really on the Esplanade, under the trees! And there are musicians sometimes, some of them very good; or sometimes break dancers, not my thing, but not obtrusive, 'cause it's a big enough place for everyone to feel at home in! ..I'm actually writing this review having come home 5 minutes ago, from having a cappucino up there! The big pleasure for me is just watching the very varied people and life going by for a short and lively break from everything else!

It's a cool public place, but there wasn't too much happening. Pop in if you're in the neighborhood, but don't go out of your way.

They say that everyone in Montpellier passes through the Place de la Comedie at some point to get anywhere - I think it's true!

I've been there during winter season so it was very well "dressed", looked very nice, made a nice christmas-feeling :)

THis is where everyone will be, people cross and recross this square to get to everywhere else in Montpellier. At Christmas the Christmas market is very close.

This is a great place with loads of bars and cafes but watch out for the pick pockets who are very professional, well dressed and work in pairs. Be very careful at the tram stop, especially if you use the ticket machine to buy a ticket.

Place de la Comédie is the main square in the city centre of Montpellier. In the middle of the square you can admire the fountain of the Three Graces, dating from 1790. The statue was sculpted by Etienne d'Antoine. It's a busy square flanked by many cafes which are often full. The old Comédie Opera and the Tourist Office are located at the square. The park Esplanade de Charles de Gaulle is located at the northeastern corner of the square.Visited September 7 2014

I liked how big the square was and how many different things were on the square. I did not dislike anything.
