Very well preserved city walls. You can climb up on the walkway and get a great view of the town as well as the surrounding fortifications, churches and ancient buildings. You can also get a good feel for how the soldiers were able to defend the town.
Steps at several locations allow you to get onto the wall, you can walk around most of the way to see the town's buildings and goings-on.
This and the tower was the favorite part of my Rothenburg visit. As you arrive in the town, you can climb the tower for a small fee, which is totally worth it because from the top of the tower you can see the whole town, and the nature surrounding it. The wall, however, is free, and it is pretty rare to be able to walk on such a well kept medieval wall. It is a great way to see the city, and it is covered with its own roof, so this is a good option even in bad weather.
Around the old city centre of Rothenburg ob der Tauber you find beautiful restaurated Medieval city walls. At some places near the entry gates you can climb them by stairs.
A superb medieval city. We actually managed to walk from one end to the other and great place for selfies. Not too sure what the inscriptions on the wall meant. As we need to rush back to Munich by dark, i guess we missed the chance to take the Watchman tour which I believe would be a great experience to feel whats it's like in history to patrol the walls. It's a fair bit of walk from the train station (20 mins i guess) so remember to check your return timetable before proceeding to the town.
My wife and i had a wonderful stay in Rothenburg. After visiting many of the museums and stores we saw that you could take a self-guided tour of the Town Walls. It turned out to be far more fascinating than we had imagined. Much of the walk was done in cover and elevated cat walk around the interior of the city. Clearly where the city defenders worked to protect the city from outside forces. Along the way there were many history lessons embedded into the walls to tell sotries of battles and deaths and victories. Also, there were many more recent additions telling about people who had helped fund the restoration of the city and tales of important families in the area. And of course a wide variety of graffiti. The best graffiti was allowed to stay. The less well intended was quickly erased. So feel free if you have something useful to contribute.
its truly amazing to see the history of this town and the town walls all still intact you can feel the atmosphere all through the town.
Easy walk and easy access. The walk around the "Old Town" is most enjoyable as it takes you back in time. It is pretty easy to put yourself in the boots of the City defenders as they prepare for an assault. The walk is enjoyable as you can see the Old Town from every vantage point. As you visit Rothenburg, walk the wall.
Amazing! Seemed like I stepped into the medieval period! Check out Rick Steve's recommendations on the town walls route. Loved it!
Walking the walls is free and its a nice chance to see what it would have been like to patrol the walls of this village. We visited the walls the day after the Night Watchman Tour so that gave us a visual image of the history and what this village was up against in the Middle Ages.
we walked around the walls. it was easy to get to and climb up. great way to see the city. Would definitely recommend an hour or so just walking along the wall
