The wooden Church of St. Michael Archangel’s Miracle is located atop of the hill by the cemetery in the village of Dora, now a suburb of Yaremche. Unlike St. Elias Church, St. Michael’s is situated off the main road, but there are road signs pointing to it. Steep uneven stairs lead uphill to the church yard, so it’s hardly apt for those with limited mobility. This one-domed wooden church is in principle one of the oldest in the area: it was built back in XVII century; and expanded in 1844 by local master Gnyshik. Since 1968 and until Ukraine’s independence the church hosted the museum of atheism. This saved it from being destroyed during the Soviet times. St. Michael Archangel’s Miracle’s church has the well preserved carved iconostasis, with some icons dating back to XVIII-XIX centuries. And for these alone could be recommended for visiting. But unfortunately, since recently the church had been almost entirely covered with an ugly metal coating. It hides the exterior of St. Michael's Miracle Church and makes it look just like one of the many other regular “metal” churches. Visiting wooden churches, I’m particularly charmed with the specifics of architectural details in their exterior, often unique. I can’t honestly say I was much impressed with what is left to see in St. Michael Archangel’s Miracle Church. Perhaps just the view over the cemetery?
