The town is beutifully set in the hills and is very attractive. It is also home to the Palace of the Brazilian Emperors whose crowns are still there. It was very busy when we were there on a Sunday and the drive back to Rio was hellish. Parking was very difficult but the town is pretty and full of attractive buildings.

took an excursion here and it really helped to put the history of brazil in perspective. We saw the imperial palace, cathedral ,crystal palace and the old casino which was fascinating.

It is a cute city and it takes guts to be able to ride the main road that gives access to the city due to its dangerous curves and steep slops. But once you get there it is all worth it. The climate is good and people are very friendly. local restaurants in this city are usually cleaner and some will be better than several in Rio city because it is less expensive and the food has a lot of flavor.

The drive to Petropolis is beautiful. The climate is much better. The horse and carriage is fun. The museum is beautiful so is the grounds. Walking around town, the beautiful summer houses!

We spent a full day in Petropolis with a private guide to see the Imperial Palace, cathedral, crystal palace, Santos Dumont house, the surrounding area, and to have a pleasant lunch. This charming historic town is 100km from Rio. We left Ipanema at 08:00 and returned at 17:15. The last 30km are a long, bumpy ascent up a road with many turns and switchbacks. The guide was useful both for transportation, and for guidance through the sites, particularly the palace. One could do this trip on their own but I do not believe it would be as meaningful or fun.Rich in history, and a lot of interesting things to learn in this place. If this review is helpful then please indicate so below.

Take a look at the imperial palace of Peter II and the beautiful garden. Visit the neo gothic cathedral. Go and see the orchid show in the crystal palace. There is also an interesting museum of Brasils famous brewery Bohemia. If you have time it is worth a visit. Has a famous restaurant as well. It is cooler than Rio.

One of the greatest places you could see on the state of Rio, full of history and architecture. You should give it a try you won't feel disappointed. Really great museum and I found quite lovely the crystal palace. Definitely a must go

I lived in Rio for five years two decades ago and so it was that I had the time to visit this location a few times during my tenure i Brasil. If I were a tourist with only a week or so in the area, I would spend more time in the city. Yes, some wealthy Rio residents I knew would make an occasional weekend trek most of my friends (and myself) favored the sparsely populated, relaxed, somewhat remote but absolutely gorgeous Angra Dos Reis for weekend escapes. Stunning natural beauty but really at that time at least was not very tourist friendly in that public facilities were not plentiful. (Great spot for those who are interested in communing with nature at its best and most unspoiled.) No crowds, no hassles, no tawdry over-commercialization---at least in that era. Sooooooooo my recommendation is simply to forgo Petropolis. There is so much more to see and do in throughout wonderful Brasil Why not visit some other cities that are no farther away via a quick flight.

The name of the city is related to the Emperor Peter II that liked to stay at this spot. There are some attraction as the house of Santos Dumont, that is believed to be one of the inventors of the planes (there is a discussion about this), and his house here is full of his inventions to real life. The town is pleasant and close to Itaipava that is a good place to visit to. Its climate is much more colder than Rio's one and for this reason is a good escape from the city. Beautiful place, with a pleasant road. But compared to the attractions in Rio, beter make sure you have seen everything there.

Temperature is much cooler than Rio; not a whole lot to do and parts of city smell sewage (which it really is).

We spent a couple of days visiting Petropolis. The parking/traffic circulation was stimulating. The Imperial Museum was very interesting with the crown jewels and many original furnishings. There was a lovely gothic cathedral. The Crystal Palace was pretty and there were many interesting buildings.

In addition to the old royal summer palace, there's a good number of old houses built by people who, like the Emperor Pedro II, escaped from Rio's hot summers. There's charm and grace in their architectural style. Alberto Santos Dumont, the true inventor of the first airplane, also built a house for him in Petrópolis, full of nice details and delicate inventions. The museum adjacent to his house makes a good work inviting people to know much more about this aviation pioneer.

Patric-Rio

The old royal summer palace with exhibition about the royal family, and a nice 9 hole golf course that have to be one of the oldest in Brazil.

Petrópolis, the city of Pedro, the emperor of Brazil until 1889, was built in and around his majesty's farm. It houses the Emperor's summer retreat with an extraordinary array of objects of that time. The city is worth visiting just because of this "humble" summer palace. But the city has more to offer, not only in beautiful landscapes and period constructions, but also the house of the (disputed) inventor of the first airplane, Mr. Santos Dumont. His genius shows in several gimmicks and inventions to make our lives easier and this can be seen by visiting a small house where he lived for a few years in Petrópolis. The list of attractions is extensive and deserves a broader review. If you have the time when coming to Rio de Janeiro, or Brazil for that matter, consider including a day trip to Petrópolis.
