very basic park surrounding, nice lake and bar b que areas. Some of the area is being upgraded and expanded.
Even though it was raining it was such a delightful and beautiful place to be. Would have loved more time and a sunny day to walk around better. Maybe next time.
These gardens are situate approx 10ks north of Wangqnui on Rapanui Road, on way to Mowhanau Beach. This reserve was bequeathed to the city of Wanganui and consists of a wonderful lawned area with magnificent trees, a lake, several barbecues scattered around the area. There is a Camellia area on the lower section which is cared for by the Camellia Society and on the upper area there is theHomestead with a beautiful garden. The grounds of this park are magnificently cared for and it is a wonderful place for a picnic and room for many groups to enjoy at any one time. It is well worth a visit. There is motoring access right around the area and one can choose a spot in which to enjoy the area. There is also a walking track through the Rhododendron area which is lovely when in flower. I was amazed at how big and how lovely this garden is.Meandering roads take you around most of the garden. Lots of areas to stop and picnic.Well worth a visit.
This wonderful Wanganui asset is worth travelling to. we took the family there from Feilding for the day. Lots of space for lots of people to enjoy. BBQs, clean loos and magnificent trees. All for free!
We drove there and sat under trees with a drink. So nice and peaceful. We had bread for the ducks as well.
These gardens are very nice and the space of the area in which gives the true account of what is there friends of my wife were down from Auckland and they were saying the plants the grass area was vast to walk around the place takes about 1 hour to drive and see the park about 10 to 15 mins plus when we were there the BBQ area was in full swing little kids were playing and they were saying from our place is only about 10 mins wanganui has a lot going for it which us fell real good I was saying next time your down there is a lot more to see this is a great town more people should come and stay and see what we have to show them very proud to be part of wanganui
The Bason Reserve is a great attraction and a credit to the wonderful Bason family who gifted this to our city. The tranquil surroundings and the beautiful gardens interspersed with ancient trees are a wonder to behold. There is so much to see and enjoy here; the BBQ areas, the scenic lake, the orchid house, the fern house and so much more. This is one of the first places that We take our visitors to enjoy.
Bason Reserve is well worth the journey. It has the most amazing trees, gardens and places to picnic. Even to drive through and admire the view. A group of fantastic volunteers are always busy making this a splendid spot.
Have been to a couple of weddings here & a BBQ with friends. Great location 10 mins from Wanganui. Lovely gardens and walkways. Great place to take the family young and old
This is one of those Whanganui treasures, any time of year a wonderful place to visit. A couple of favorites are the house garden with the herb garden and the coin well which tells your future - how cool is that. Actually there are heaps of special places in this garden. Take a picnic use the free bar b ques and enjoy this magic place.
how lucky is Wanganui to have such wonderful people who donated this parcel of land... and the skill and talent of the gardeners to keep the grounds so lovely.. more than one tour is a must, so much to see... absolutely grand!
A large park - you can drive everywhere with it. Lovely palms and trees - a play area for cricket etc.Well provisioned BBQ's. An ideal place for a family or group picnic. There is an old homestead on the perimeter with beautifully kept gardens that are open to the public. The grounds also house 3-4 large hot houses with a variety of plants - including orchids.Somwewhere to spend a relaxing couple of hours or more - or just drive around.
We visited in our way out of Wanganui and were pleased we did. Beautiful grounds and bigger than we had expected
The Bason Botanic gardens a few miles north of Wanganui are a delight. Free entry, and plenty of carparking. One can wander through the various paths and open areas, or drive. There are beautifully designed conservatories with some rare and exotic plants and flowers within, and with plenty of information about them. Throughout the gardens there is good signposting, toilets, barbecue areas and seating. This is a very pleasant way to spend an hour or two, especially is you go on a quiet day, which we did, and pretty much had the whole place to ourselves.Perhaps a small cafe would be a welcome addition, but not to worry, as this is more a place to bring a picnic basket or foods for BBQ. A tranquil, delightful and serene reserve, well worth a visit on a fine morning or afternoon.
