otaru museum, bank of japan

I work in the finance industry & it is worth an hour to see a branch office, esp that it is on my way fr the train station to the canal/shopping district. I don't know whether there is other BoJ HQ/branch that is open to visitor.

The outside of the Bank of Japan Museum is a magnificent piece of architecture but it was a rare opportunity to see what an old-style Japanese bank looked like from the inside.Entry is free.The old counter where the tellers stood occupied the full width of the main room.The vault at the rear was the most interesting. Huge stainless steel doors led to the inner vault which was mostly empty. However, on interactive display was a bundle of banknotes totalling 100 million yen, wrapped in brown paper and encased in a larger perspex case sitting on a short pedestal. There were two holes in the top where you can insert your hands and lift the bundle to see how heavy it is!I tried to get it out of the hole but it wouldn't come out! I guess I wasn't the first to try that!

An educational experience for my kids. We spent quite some time there and it was a good insight to banking in Japan.

Free entry to the Bank of Japan building which dates from 1868 and is one of many old historical buildings you will encounter as you stroll around Otaru. The exhibits are OK but mainly in Japanese. The best bit is the walk into what was once the vault ... albeit the money in there now is definitely fake

It's right in the centre of town and free, so nothing to lose by stopping by. However, a lot of information is not displayed in English.

It was a free exhibit. The guard gave us a free English guide to the exhibit. it had free lockers to put your stuff in, so you could walk around unencumbered. I liked seeing how the bank ran and how Japan's monetary system evolved.

This is anice cetaiur around the city... it has a marvelous period archtechtural design not of Japan... better higlighted with flood lights as to be seen in the early evenings. The museum course is for free, but donations are most welcome... it is all about money, money money...in Yens of course

Off the beaten pathy of the canal and shops but so worth going just to see a billion yen! The staff are friendly and the experience was great -- I even had my passport stamped in the lobby! Worth a visit and there is guidance in English as well.

小樽市街を歩いていたら、レトロで立派な建物が目に入り、しかも無料ということで入ってみました。小樽や北海道の歴史だけでなく、日本銀行や銀行券（お金）について詳しく触れることができました。日銀の歴史って、今の私たちの暮らしや経済に密接に関わっていて、生活の中で当たり前になってることが、実はこういう仕組みで動いているんだ！ということを学ばせてもらいました。それと、実際の1億円の重さとかも体験できるコーナーがあり、楽しく学べるコーナーが設置されていました。大人だけでなく中学生や高校生でも社会勉強になるんじゃないかと感じました。阪神大震災の時、日銀が被災した銀行を後方支援して、被災者の生活を立て直す役割を果たしたことなども、改めて見ることができ、非常時の生活復旧にも大きな役割を果たしているんだと感心したところです。

パネルがあり、貨幣の歴史をいろいろ学ぶことができます。北海道での金融の歴史も学べ、小樽は明治時代、北海道の中心地だったことを初めて知りました。また金庫があったりするので、お子様でも楽しめる内容になっています。

日銀の資料館は、日本橋の本店隣にある貨幣博物館と、当地の金融資料館しかありません。こちらのほうは、つい最近（2002年）まで営業していた支店の建物をそのまま使っており、建物的にも大変価値があります。また中の展示内容についても、日銀の業務内容や、金融の歴史等が展示しており、非常に興味深いものです。また、元金庫も見学することができます。銀行の金庫なんてそう見る機会がないので、のぞきに行く価値があるでしょう。

日銀小樽支店というと、一般市民にはお金の出し入れには関係ないが、その由緒ある建物と北海道でのお金融の中心地であったことを偲ばせる建物！夜にはライトアップされ、観光客が運河からの帰りに記念撮影に立ち止る。

社会科見学みたいな感じでしたが、内容は充実しています。建物でけに興味がある人は建物の写真を撮るのみでいいかもしれません。じっくり中を見学していると時間がなくなります。

小樽の金融街の中心地に位置する日本銀行の小樽支店だった場所が資料館として無料で開館しています。まず建物だけでも非常に価値のあるもので、東京駅の建築など手がけた辰野金吾によるものです。2階には回廊があり、高い天井で見事な彫刻が随所にみられます。展示物も小樽の歴史がよくわかるほか、日本銀行の仕事の説明もわかり、興味深いものです。ここが無料で開放されているのは信じられないくらいで、内外から多数の訪問者があることも頷けます。

日本銀行旧小樽支店が金融資料館になってます。小樽は歴史建造物がたくさん残っていますが、辰野金吾弟子の長野宇平治らが設計した、ルネッサンス様式です。営業カウンターがそのまま保存されていたり、1億円の模擬バックを持ち上げたり、お札の日本の技術が見えたり、建物と金融の歴史が見えて意外に楽しい。
